Since its founding in December 2003, whi has helped to prevent or cure fistula in different countries by contributing to infrastructure, surgery and training/prevention.
Infrastructure
- In recent years, the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital has set up five peripheral clinics. A total of CHF 258,000 have been used for the two clinics in Yirga Alem, Southern Ethiopia (opened in November 2006) and Metu, West Ethiopia (opened in April 2010).
- whi has funded all-terrain vehicles in Ethiopia to the amount of CHF 116,000; the vehicles make it possible to transport patients and provide education about fistula in remote areas.
- whi spent CHF 263,000 to help fund schoolrooms and dormitories for the Hamlin Midwives’ College.
Surgery
A total of CHF 291,000 were provided to our project countries Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Liberia and Sierra Leone for fistula surgery.
Training of professional staff and fistula prevention
- CHF 133,000 have already been invested for the training of local midwives, nurses and surgeons.
- CHF 50,000 have been invested in the reintegration of women with unhealed fistula as well as fistula prevention.
