Fikru's Story

Fikru, can you tell me something about yourself and your family?
Fikru Benga: I am 29 years old and have been trained as a specialised nurse. I have been married for four years and we have a three-year-old son. Our family lives in a flat provided by the Hospital. Aside from my work as a teacher, I am taking further education summer courses at the University of Harar. I grew up as the youngest of eight children near Attat in Ethiopia. I walked to middle school for four hours and back each day. But the long educational period was truly worth it. I simply love to teach.
Who is responsible for the students' education?
Fikru Benga: We are a team of five teachers, consisting of three healthcare professionals and two midwives with special training. We work very well together. In addition, several guest lecturers are teaching at the college. The midwifery college is led by a nun, Sister Clara. One woman is responsible for the dormitories. We also have a librarian and a secretary.
What do you like most about your work?
Fikru Benga: I just love teaching! I particularly enjoy doing the practical training with my students. The students have lots of opportunity to practice, as the college is near a 200-bed hospital. Sometimes, they even help the nursing staff during their leisure time. I think that’s great. My work makes me happy and satisfies me.
