Wobete's Story

Wobete, or "Beauty" in English, is a gracefully built young woman. Her mother died when she was young. Her father thought that a marriage would bring security, so he married her off four times to the highest bidder between the ages of 12 and 14. He did this because it is commonplace his culture and because his friends advised him to do so. When Wobete became pregnant, she stayed with her last husband until she bore a stillborn child. Afterwards, she was sent back to her father as 'used'. She was incontinent and no longer of service. In his distorted affection, her father brought her to a hospital. Her fistula was not healed. A surgeon then suggested a ureter plug, which is removed before going to the toilet, and this worked.
And now? Where was Wobete to go? Who would still want her? The Grace Village of Abraham’s Oasis wanted her! Wobete worked there for a few years as a nanny. Then the provincial administration set the requirement that all nannies must have at least six years of school education. She then worked as a cook. Together with the other former nannies, she attended evening classes. All have completed their six years of school and can now work as nannies again.
Abraham’s Oasis provides women with fistulas that cannot be completely healed a satisfying occupation and employs them in different areas as domestic staff. This means a return to a life in dignity, even without complete healing.
Wobete is one of the performers in the film "A Walk to Beautiful"
