The Strong Desire to Help Others
Belen - a midwifery student from Ethiopia

The midwifery student Belen has a great motivation to help others. In her spare time, she often visits poor families in the vicinity of the college, listens to them and tries to help them with their problems. She seldom sees her own family because it is only possible to travel to her home town Yirgalem twice a year.
The Desire to Help
Belen developed this compassion at an early age. As a child, she nursed her mother, who was very ill with high blood pressure. This situation often overwhelmed her as an only child and she wished she could help her more. That is when the little girl's wish began to become a doctor. She made great efforts in school and was overjoyed when she was accepted at the Hamlin College of Midwives when she was 19.
A Very Practical Course of Study
In the meantime, she is already in her fourth year of studies and is just writing her paper for her bachelor's degree. Following this, she will have three months of practical training where she will assist at childbirths. By the end of her studies, she will have assisted at least 40 births.
Great Plans
Belen has clear goals for the future: She is already looking forward to working at a remote health centre for the next four years and would like to continue her studies afterwards. After completing her Master's in Obstetrics, she wants to specialize in gynaecology.
